The Spirit and Essence

Cyrus was born on November 5th, 1999 and grew up in Moretown, part of the scenic Mad River Valley.

Cy grew up playing youth sports in the valley, including soccer, baseball, and basketball, as well as skiing at Sugarbush and swimming in the Mad River. He was an honor student who went on to play varsity soccer and baseball at Harwood Union High School. Sports were a big part of his life.

Each summer Cyrus traveled with his family to his “favorite place on Earth”, Martha’s Vineyard.  It was there, he learned to ride the surf, captain the boat and be a kid enjoying the beach.  He loved to share the Banana Stand, as the family house was known, with his friends.  He and some of his friends had plans to take surfing lessons and “meet girls” there in the coming years.

At a young age Cyrus learned to love travel. His grandparents took the family to France. While there, he toured ancient castles, saw the sunflowers in the French countryside and watched fireworks on Bastille Day above the Eiffel Tower. He traveled the western United States on more than one occasion and visited Florida with both of his grandmothers. Prior to his passing he was scheduled to go to Greece and Italy with his classmates in the spring of his junior year.

After high school, Cy had plans to attend college in the mountains of the western United States or Canada. He entertained thoughts of studying journalism: This, he thought, would enable him to travel the world.

Traveling with his family enabled Cyrus to experience life outside of Vermont, broaden his horizons and set his sights high.  Something we feel every young person should have the opportunity to do.

In Cyrus’ memory, we hope to help students achieve their travel dreams and to give a Cy L.I.F.T. to those who need it.
